Gilbert is a town in
Mingo County,
West Virginia, USA along the
Guyandotte River. The population was 417 at the 2000 census. Gilbert was
incorporated in
1918 and named for Gilbert Creek, which derives its name from the name of an early traveler in the area who was killed by
Native Americans in the area.

Gilbert is located at (37.614497, -81.867212).

United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.8
km² (1.1
mi²). 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it's land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (6.42%) is water.
Demographics
As of the
census of 2000, there were 417 people, 187 households, and 120 families residing in the town. The
population density was 157.8/km² (407.6/mi²). There were 227 housing units at an average density of 85.9/km² (221.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.84%
White, 0.96%
Asian, and 1.20% from two or more races.
There were 187 households out of which 27.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.3% were
married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.8% were non-families. 31.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.82.
In the town the population was spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $29,219, and the median income for a family was $32,250. Males had a median income of $38,750 versus $25,938 for females. The
per capita income for the town was $20,219. About 11.7% of families and 15.5% of the population were below the
poverty line, including 16.7% of those under age 18 and 16.9% of those age 65 or over.
